On Sunday, July 21, 2024, a dead shark was found along the coast in Rudelić Draga (Lukovo Šugarje - Karlobag). The photo was posted in the Facebook group Lukovo Šugarje Croatia, and we are sharing it with the permission of the group members.

Previously, we reported an incident where a shark entered the salmon and trout cages at the farm owned by Adria farming d.o.o., located not far from this location. This raises the question of a potential connection between these events. One of the group members commented on our inquiry about posting the photo: "Post it, let people see how much damage this fish farm has done to us."

From the comments of the group members, as well as our conversations with residents and visitors of Lukovo Šugarje and the surrounding areas, it is clear there is dissatisfaction with the work of the Karlobag municipality. It is strange that the municipality's priority is to destroy the coast for the promenade to the "Hungarian villas," instead of addressing key issues such as building a water supply for Lukovo Šugarje in almost the second quarter of the 21st century. This beautiful but forgotten part of Croatia faces many challenges.

It seems that many in the municipal leadership find it hard to accept the fact that they do not live and do not govern Lovran or Opatija and that the reason why people love living or visiting the Podvelebit channel is not a winter walk on the newly built promenade during a hurricane bora, but the untouched nature that is now irreversibly destroyed. Also, the reason why life in Lukovo Šugarje is harder than in most of Croatia and why visitors avoid Lukovo Šugarje is the lack of basic living conditions such as water supply and sewage, which have been awaited in this beautiful part of our homeland since the seventh century.

We contacted the Lika-Senj Police Department and the mayor of Karlobag, Mr. Boris Smojver, for comment. We will publish additional information as soon as we receive it from the competent authorities.

We also remind readers of our previous articles about the entry of the shark:

In recent months, there has been an increase in shark sightings in the Podvelebit channel, causing concern among local residents and visitors. Many are wondering how this will affect the local fishing industry and tourism. The area is known for its natural beauty but also as an important fishing area. Residents complain about the lack of support and interest from local authorities in addressing this issue.

Karlobag and its surroundings have always been attractive to tourists due to their unique combination of mountains and sea. However, recent events indicate the need for better regulation and protection of natural resources. Concrete measures are necessary to preserve biological diversity and prevent further environmental degradation.

Furthermore, the economic development of this area depends on tourism, fishing, and agriculture. Problems with sharks can have long-term negative consequences for all these sectors. Urgent intervention by the competent authorities is needed to ensure the safety and sustainability of the local community.

We await further information and updates from the competent authorities, and we will promptly publish all news on our portal.
